It’s that time of year again, a time when 1970s behemoth cars can be seen in driveways and shops throughout the area, dismantled in various states of repair as the fair weekend approaches.
The Lake County Desert Cruisers, along with Lakeview Little League, co-sponsor the annual staple event of the fair weekend. This year’s derby is set for the evening of Sunday, Sept. 1, inside the Lake County Fairgrounds’ horse arena.
Lakeview Little League hosts a 50/50 raffle fundraiser at the derby each year, with the winning ticket holder drawn prior to the main event.
The car club announced in October 2012 that the cash purse for the main event winner would be raised from $1,000 to $2,000 with hopes of attracting more participation.
The second and third place main event winners have historically been awarded a trophy plus $500 and $200, respectively.
Cash purses for the three individual heats would remain unchanged from previous years, said Lake County Desert Cruisers spokesman Phil Elder. Historically, that payout has been $200 and a trophy for the winner of each heat race.
