Additional funding opportunities are currently sought for the library construction project, after a bond measure failed in the May special election. A brick and window package is expected to be completed by this fall to fully seal the building in the following winter months.

Lakeview High School Cafeteria is one of the building’s many rooms undergoing structural reinforcement. Warner Creek Correctional Facility and Treasure Valley Community College hosted a June 27 GED graduation ceremony for inmates that completed the program. A total of 18 inmates graduated from the GED program this year.

Fire crews from multiple agencies responded to a wildfire near Summer Lake last week. The fire, first reported on Monday, Aug. 8, started as a result of lightning activity, according to Forest Service officials.

Machinery used for the ongoing construction sits on the side of Westside Road. The project, which is funded through a state grant, is scheduled to be completed shortly after labor day.

Lakeview firefighters responded to a fire at Fremont Sawmill on the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 6, where a front-end loader was found engulfed in flames.

Stringer’s Wild Plum Winery of New Pine Creek recently introduced a new gin, which has so far garnered a bronze medal in the 2011 West Coast Wine Competition, and is in the running for an additional award. A 55 foot Douglas Fir tree from the Tillamook State Forest stopped in Lakeview on Friday, Nov. 25, en route to Sparks, Nev., for the Sparks Christmas celebration in Victoria Square. The tree was transported by Terry Freeman of Terry Freeman trucking, who is the brother-in-law of Lakeview resident Bev Hills.

A Portland man is currently petitioning for the statewide ban of studded tires. Jeff Benards cites an ODOT study that indicates more than $40 million in damage to Oregon’s highways due to studded tire use. The proposal has generated a reaction from Lake County and Oregon citizens alike.

Don Moore started his new position as the Lake County Fairgrounds in late November. The Drain, native will perform maintenance and managerial duties at the facility.

Stewart’s Marketeria, which was opened in Lakeview in the late 1960s, will be closing operations in the upcoming months, owner Tim Tucker said this week. Tucker noted several issues that have led to the store closure.

Sometimes, in life, what’s old becomes new again; at least such may be the case when enough time has passed. A former staple storefront that lay dormant for many years is now once again open for business. The variety store known as Eri’s V&S recently reopened its doors under the ownership and management of Lakeview couple Ken and Kay Wagner. The couple said that the store reopened on Thursday, March 1. Eri’s V&S is a familiar sight for anyone that wanders down North E Street in downtown Lakeview, as the ‘60s era stylized signage has weathered decade upon decade through multiple Lake County seasons. Like the mighty mythical Phoenix rising from the ashes, the store marks the latest reactivated storefront in the downtown Lakeview area. The store opened originally in June 1964, when Betty Eri and her late husband, Wally, bought the former Sprouse Reitz store and proffered a new name. For nearly four decades, the couple ran the variety store as a mainstay in the downtown area, ultimately turning over the store’s operation to daughter Kay and her husband Ken in 2000. Kay said that the duo operated the store before permanently closing it in 2002. While both lived in Lakeview, they worked as truck drivers and were frequently out of the area. Ultimately, they returned home on a permanent basis to care for Betty and Wally, Kay’s parents. Kay said that the idea to reopen the store germinated following a number of requests from folks interested in renting the storefront. Ultimately, the decision was made to reopen the store and provide one more shopping option to local residents, she said. “A lot of people approached us in the community,” she said. “We just decided to give it a try, and put in something that would support the community a little bit.” The store is truly old-school variety in its inventory, featuring items ranging from toys to household items, party supplies and craft items, Kay said. Snack items will be available, ranging from cold beverages to sandwiches, donuts and more. The store’s original floor space has been reduced with facades at the rear in an effort to keep heating costs nominal. As the store’s inventory needs grow, so will the afforded room in the store, Ken said. “Even though we’ve shortened the store down, we’ve increased the inventory space,” he said, noting that higher shelving and display fixtures afford more product in reduced space. “We hope to keep prices as low as we can.” Business hours haven’t been fully defined yet, but the store opens at 10 a.m. Eri’s V&S is located at 18 N. E St. And to further prove that some things never change, the store’s phone number, (541) 947-3288, is the same set of digits assigned back in 1964. For more information, give the Wagners a call.

Artwork by Genevieve Turner (aka Cloud) will be showcased at the Lake County Courthouse through May. Turner’s watercolor and pastel-based paintings first went on display on Tuesday, March 6, and will continue to be displayed over a three-month period. The display is a progressive grouping inclusive of works Turner created in childhood up to present day. Turner is an active member of the Lake County Arts and Crafts Association.

A fire on the afternoon of Friday, March 23, completely destroyed a Fort Rock retirement center complex. Firefighters from Silver Lake and Christmas Valley fire departments, as well as the Walker Range Fire Department in Crescent, responded to the blaze. No injuries were reported in the event.

Lakeview’s Shawn Greenfield recently placed fourth in steer wrestling at the Rodeo Austin, which took place in Austin, Texas, from Monday, March 12, through Saturday, March 24. Greenfield had the top average at the event and currently sits in third place in the 2012 world standings.

One of the biggest draws of the event were the free Knights of Columbus burgers handed out from 2 to 4 p.m. No one complained about the price as the line stayed long.

Once the dancing did begin, there seemed no stopping it. Many talented dancers took to the parking lot ready to twist and twirl the evening away.

Annette Goeres kept smiles on the kids faces and, in this case, a butterfly. There always seemed to be a line of children ready to sit and have her paint their faces.

It was Shea Newman’s turn to wield the pickaxe as Kelton Vanhoesen took a break and watched during this year’s Honkers football work service fundraiser. The team sent a call out the community asking for house and yard projects they would complete in exchange for donations. Newman and Vanhoesen joined a group of about 12 other players helping to dig a ditch for a local resident. Coach Sean Radford said they ended up with 15 different jobs around town, raising over $1000 in the process. “It is just kind of nice for them to earn this money themselves through community service,” Coach Radford said.

With Gov. Kitzhaber declaring a state of emergency with regard to the fires ravaging southern Oregon, including the Barry Point fire, the National Guard has mobilized help. These three Black Hawk helicopters flew in over the weekend to assist the firefighting efforts by loading and dropping up to a thousand gallons of water on the gradually slowing fire.

After a hard 12 hour shift, this group of firefighters tries to find some quiet time away from the fire at the fairgrounds where they have made their temporary home.

Oregon, elk have been subject to a mysterious disease that has suddenly and inexplicably taken the life of many.
