Alda M. Israel

Alda M. Israel 96, passed away peacefully at Lakeview Long Term Care on Thursday, June 6, 2013.

Alda was born July 30, 1916 to Roland and Lila May Saunders in Castleton, Utah. After her mother passed away in the 1918 flu epidemic, her father married Hazel Messner and Alda grew up near Fruita, Colo. She  later moved with her step-mother and younger brother and sister to Grants Pass where she went to high school. Alda went to college at Gunnison State College in Colorado during the difficult depression years and found a teaching job at a county school near Ridgeway, Colo. in 1937.

She met her husband to be, Glen Israel on a blind date on April Fool’s day and they were married in Moab, Utah on Nov. 24, 1938. Alda continued to teach at a country school in  Ridgeway area for a short while riding a horse to school from their ranch. She then helped on their cattle ranch near Ridgeway and intermittently taught school on an as needed basis over the next 20 years, later serving on the school board for a number of years.

In 1973 they sold their ranch property in Ouray County and Montrose, Colo. and purchased a ranch in Beatty. In 1977 Alda moved to Lakeview after Glen’s death and began helping at the Lake County Senior Center. Alda later managed the senior center for 10 years, retiring at age 74 to enjoy her many friends, First Baptist Church family and pinochle clubs for the next 20 years.

Alda was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glen; brothers Douglas and Martin; sisters Helen Winburn and Capitola Saunders.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Phil and Beth Israel of Lakeview; brother Bob Saunders of Fruita, Colo; granddaughter Cindy Israel of Ojai, Calif.

Visitation will be at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Thursday, June 13, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a private interment at Hillcrest Cemetery in Grants Pass with a Memorial Service at the Lakeview First Baptist Church on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 10 a.m.

Contributions in Alda’s memory ma be made to the Lakeview First Baptist Church, 910 N. 2nd St., Lakeview 97630 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Desert Rose Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
