Saturday, Aug. 24, marked the opening of this year’s bow hunting season, with about five bucks submitted after the weekend to the Lakeview Les Schwab’s Lucky Buck contest. Mary Foster, one of the lucky hunters who took home a buck this past weekend, managed to hit one on the first day of her hunt.
Mary and her husband, Craig, went hunting with three others in northern Lake County around Summer Lake. The group saw five bucks during the day, but didn’t get good shots at any other but Mary’s.
Mary hit the young forked-horn deer from about 30 yards, and was surprised to see the arrow right through its heart after finding the dying buck. Craig and Jeff Howard, who was also along for the hunt, chased the buck toward Mary, who whistled and quickly took the shot.
This was the second deer she’s ever taken down with a bow, and Mary said of her shot, “I wasn’t quite as nervous this time.” The group hunted for around three hours, arriving in the area around 6:15 – 6:30 a.m. and downing the buck just before 9:30 a.m.
