Ariel L. Smith, 77, formerly of Bend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the long term care facility in Lakeview.
Ariel was born April 14, 1936 in Portland to Edward D. and Margret Smith. Ariel married Anthony Leigh Smith in August of 1955 in Portland. In 1959 they moved to the Bend area with their two small children where they soon became a “forest service family” on the Fort Rock District of the Deschutes National Forest. They lived at Cabin Lake Guard Station just north of Fort Rock in 1960, 1968 and 1969. Ariel spent her adult life enjoying the beauty of central and eastern Oregon with family and friends. Ariel also enjoyed the Oregon Coast. Ariel dearly loved her two children, Jason and Lanette, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as her many dogs and cats over the years. She also treasured her special friends and relatives, many lifelong from all over the world. Ariel enjoyed and was highly skilled at gardening, cooking, genealogy, history and Pacific Northwest natural history.
In 1998 Ariel and Tony retired to Lakeview and treasured every day spent in what they considered one of Oregon’s most friendly, respectable and scenic towns. Ariel loved and was dedicated to her Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, her friends there and Father Landrith were a supportive family.
Ariel was preceded in death by her husband Tony in April 2007.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Jason E. and Mary Smith of Winthrop, Wash.; daughter Lanette Smith of Lakeview; grandchildren Forest O. Thompson of Helena, Mont. and Sierra and Jason Hartney; great-grandchildren Timothy and Cora Hartney of Mt. Vernon,Wash.; Cousins Michael and Marianne Hadler-Brady and two sons Thomas and Alexander Hadler-Brady of Asker, Norway.
At Ariel’s request no services will be held.
