Lakeview High boys soccer squad handed the Umpqua Valley Christian (UVC) Monarchs their first defeat of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in Lakeview, scoring two points to the Monarchs’ one. The LHS team fell to Canyonville Christian Academy Pilots at an away game on Saturday, Oct. 12, though, losing 3 to 0.
Lakeview’s game against the Umpqua team was tied at the end of the second overtime of the game, 1-1, with Lakeview finally inching ahead of the Monarchs in penalty kicks. The second overtime was followed by a set of penalty kicks by five team-members selected by coaches from each team, of which Lakeview blocked three and scored three, allowing Umpqua only finished two and prevented two.
UVC’s first kicker scored, while Lakeview’s first kick by Dominic Leal was blocked. UVC’s second kicker scored, with Abraham Orozco scoring on Lakeview’s second kick.
Lakeview goalkeeper Simon Ballaine blocked the next three of Umpqua’s shots. Connor Lysne scoring the second point and Cody Hamilton scoring the third.
“The other team was 9-0, this was a big victory,” Lakeview’s boy’s soccer coach, Jim Nicholl said. “It was easily the most exciting game in LHS soccer history. From the first whistle, it was a very even matchup and a nail biter all the way through.”
