Lifetime Lakeview resident, Charlie Drinkwater, 73, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Reno, Nev.
Charlie was born on March 25, 1939 to Charles and Lila Mae Drinkwater in Lakeview.
He was a proud member of the Lakeview High School class of 1957 and starred on the Honker football, basketball and track teams. Charlie attended the University of Oregon, where, in addition to his studies, he participated on the football and track teams. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1962 and served one tour in Vietnam.
Charlie returned to Lakeview upon his discharge from the Army and worked for his parents at the Phillips 66 distribution plant west of town. He married his soul mate and life partner, Vicki Sue Carlson on Nov. 7, 1964. Together they served the best hamburgers and milkshakes in Eastern Oregon for 17 years at the Polar Bear in Lakeview. The relationships developed during these years remained important to Charlie throughout the remainder of his life.
From the time he was a young man until his last days, Charlie left footprints all over Lake County. Whether it was fishing at Deep Creek and Campbell Lake, hunting deer or waterfowl, getting wood or collecting mushrooms, he knew every nook and hollow in Lake County. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman and was proud to call Lake County his lifelong home. He and his wife Vicki were inseparable. Together they enjoyed traipsing around Lake County, watching their grandkids grow up, traveling to Reno, Nev., fishing in Alaska, maintaining their extensive gardens and enjoying the fruits of their labor.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Lila Mae Drinkwater.
He is survived by his wife Vicki Drinkwater of Lakeview; son Darrell Drinkwater of Virginia Beach, Va.; son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Robin Drinkwater of Grants Pass; daughter and son-in-law Deanna Drinkwater and Dan Schulze of Lakeview; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Lavonne Drinkwater of Lakeview; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Robert Warner of Lakeview; grandsons Joshua Drinkwater and Trevor Schulze of Lakeview and Keith and Kevin Drinkwater of Grants Pass; step-grandchildren Kyle Sorus of Cottage Grove and Rachel Robertson of Taos, N.M.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie left us unexpectedly and way too soon. He will be missed greatly by his family and all whose lives he touched.
At Charlie’s request, no service will be held. The family requests that anyone with an interest should please write a note containing a fond memory of or story about Charlie and send it to Vicki Drinkwater, 18794 Lakeridge Road, Lakeview 97630.
