Daniel Ugalde, 86, passed away Oct. 7, 2013 at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nev.
Daniel was born Sept. 3, 1927 at 9 Mile Ranch. He was the seventh of eight children born to Juan Antonio Ugalde and Paula Maria Erquiaga Ugalde. Dan was the only one of the children born at 9 Mile Ranch.
He went to the 8th grade in Kings River Valley. Because of the large family, he and some of his brothers and sisters had to work away from the ranch. Dan spent two years in the Army in Korea. He was a rancher.
Dan married Sammye Johnstone on Sept. 13, 1952. They lived in Winnemucca. He worked for a while at the Getchell Mine and then for John Tallman when John first purchased the Lumber Company. Sammye and Dan moved back to 9 Mile Ranch to help his mother Paula and brother Emilio. They later purchased the ranch from Paula and raised their four children Eddyann, John, Frank and Robert there. Son John and his wife Renae bought the ranch and Dan and Sam moved to Lakeview. Semi-retired, the two of them worked together refinishing furniture for people. The ranch called them home again after the loss of their son Bob.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents Antonio and Paula Ugalde; son Bob Ugalde; brothers Jaime, Emilio and Theodore Ugalde; sisters Aurelia, Helen and Anna; nephews Tony Ugalde and Gene Jones.
Daniel is survived by his wife of 61 years Sammye; son Frank Ugalde; son and daughter-in-law John and Renae Ugalde; daughter and son-in-law Eddyann and Dan Filippini; daughter-on-law Julia Ugalde; brother Aldopho Ugalde; sister-in-law Donna Ugalde; grandchildren Max Filippini, Mary Filippini, Hank Filippini, Victor Ugalde, Sam Ugalde; great-granddaughter Brooke Ro Filippini; numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan loved 9 Mile Ranch and Kings River Valley, his family and his wonderful friends, neighbors and his dog Creep. He will surely be missed by all who knew him. God has a special man in his arms now.
Dan requested no service. His wish was to be cremated and put on “the hill” with his son and his brother.
