Derward Lee “Woody” Merrill

Derward Lee “Woody” Merrill, 81, died at the Lake District Long Term Care Facility in Lakeview on Monday, March 14, 2011.
Woody was born to Samuel and Myra (Johnson) Merrill in Battiest, Okla. on June 20, 1929. He moved to Washington when he was 15 to work in the fruit harvest with his family and then in 1947 he came to Lakeview.
He was married to Jeri Foster on June 20, 1953 in Reno, Nev.
He started his 30 plus years with Lakeview Lumber Products in 1947, which was interrupted by his service in the Army. After serving a tour of duty in Korea, he returned to Lakeview Lumber Products. After retiring he owned and operated Lakeview Hardware for a short time and then worked for the Lake County Road Department until his retirement.
Woody was very proud of receiving the Dave Liska Award for more than 20 years volunteering with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
He was a very devoted family man who also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. It was said that he knew this Eastern Oregon High Desert country like the back of his hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jeri; brothers Henry, Winfred, Elbert and Vernon; sister Alma.
Woody is survived by son and daughter-in-law Larry and Penny Merrill of Eugene; daughter and son-in-law Dana and John Gordon of New Pine Creek; brother Clyde Merrill of Crescent City, Calif.; sister Virginia Young of Sawyer, Calif.; grandchildren Larry, Jr. of Eugene, Kyle Morris of Redmond, Melanie Morris of Lakeview and Heather Phillips of New Pine Creek; two great-grandchildren;
A memorial service will be held at the Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be in Sunset Park Cemetery with Military honors provided by the Layne Clifton V.F.W. Post 4070. Following the services a potluck dinner will be served at Woody’s home at 1169 S. F St.
Contributions in Woody’s memory may be made to Lakeview Disaster Unit, P.O. Box 1007, Lakeview 97630 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Desert Rose Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
