At a meeting of the Lakeview School District #7 Board of Directors, Tami Johnson, the District’s assessment testing coordinator, gave a presentation on a new state assessment program, “Smarter Balanced”.
Smarter Balanced testing will be implemented in the 2014-2015 school year, but will be piloted this spring by District #7 schools, as well as others that volunteered for the program around Oregon.
According to Johnson, local schools volunteered for the opportunity with the expectation that only a few might be selected. As it turns out, nearly all the grades that the testing is directed at will be piloting it locally. The field test begins March 18 and runs through June 6.
The initial testing will be ungraded “students will not receive their results. According to the Smarter Balanced website, www.smarterbalanced.org, “The field test is a trial run of the assessment system that helps ensure the assessments are valid, reliable, and fair for all students.”
Their field test is also intended to help schools gauge their readiness for the testing beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.
As part of her presentation, Johnson covered other changes leading up to this point, including shifts in curriculum
