Dorothy Berniece Hawk Griffin, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Lakeview on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011.
Dorothy was born in Tekoa, Wash. on May 4, 1921 to John and Elsie Hawk. She was the third of 12 children. She graduated from Tekoa High School in 1939, and worked in a seed factory until World War II started. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and was stationed at Camp Lee, Va., working in the post library. During the war she met and married Clifford Griffin, a US Navy sailor.
Dorothy became a “Navy wife” and lived in numerous seaport cities in the U.S. and also in Japan. When Clifford retired from the Navy, they lived in Cedar City, Utah and Weiser, Idaho. When Clifford passed away in 2004, Dorothy moved to Lakeview to be near her son, John.
Dorothy is survived by sons Clifford Griffin Jr of Edmonds, Wash. and John Griffin of Lakeview; daughters Judith Walsh of El Cajon, Calif. and Kathleen O’Brien of Sandy, Utah;brothers Thomas Hawk of Lacey, Wash. and Arthur Hawk of Aloha;sisters June Meyer, Patty Crook of Spokane, Wash. and Elsie Howard of Tacoma, Wash.; grandsons Kevin Walsh of Brooklyn, N.Y. and James O’Brien of Sandy, Utah; great-grandchildren Amelia and Leonardo Walsh of Brooklyn, N.Y.;
To honor Dorothy’s wishes, no services will be held.
