There will be much more than just pride on the line when Desert Cruisers host the next round of drag racing at the Lakeview Dragstrip July 5-6.
The Firecracker Cash Bash will have a $2,000 prize at stake, adding extra incentive to the collective of greasers, tinkerers and racers that flock to the track every summer to showcase their skills.
An assortment of hot rods, funny cars and muscle cars will be on display for two days of racing. Sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), racing will be conducted in three categories: Sportsman, Pro and Super Pro.
A thousand dollar cash payouts will occur on both days of racing. Following regular format bracket racing for points on Saturday, additional cash races will take place separated by class. Winner of the Super Pro class will earn $250, second place gets $150. The Pro class winner will earn $200 for their efforts, with $100 to the runner-up. For Sportsman racers $200 will be on the line for the winner and $100 for second.
Sunday will have the regular bracket points racing, followed by cash races with all cars of each class lumped into one big pool racing for the money. Timed starts will match cars from every class, the winner receiving $500, runner-up getting $250 and third and fourth place receiving $125 each.
With cash up for grabs more out of town cars and drivers are expected. Race Coordinator Mike Yates expects drivers to come from as far away as Medford, Winnemucca and possibly Susanville to compete.
Time trials start at 10 a.m., with elimination rounds beginning at 1 p.m. on both days.
Admission is free for spectators at the Lakeview Dragstrip, located at 17993 Airport Rd. next to the Lakeview Airport.
