As the New Year approaches, so does the time for the Elks Club National Hoop Shoot free-throw contest.
At the local level, the Lakeview Elks Lodge is sponsoring their free-throw competition on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview High School’s Honker Court.
The Hoop Shoot is open to boys and girls from age 8 to 13 years old, with 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 year old boy and girl divisions.
Age groups are determined by contestant ages as of April 1, 2014.
Each competitor will shoot 25 free throws, with 8-9 year olds shooting from 11 ft. in and the 10-11 and 12-13 year old divisions shooting from the free throw line.
Boys will use a regulation-size basketball with girls shooting a girls basketball.
Six winners from the local competition will advance to a district contest to be held in Prineville on Jan. 19.
District winners have the opportunity to advance to state, regional and national competitions, with the final held in Springfield, Mass.
The top six national finalists are inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame also in Springfield.
