Elks Lodge elect new officers, annual awards

Lakeview Elks Lodge B.P.O.E #1536 elected its new Exalted Ruler for 2014-15 and appointed new officers during a banquet held on Saturday, March 29.

Justin Phillips, in his fourth year of membership with the Lodge, was elected as the new Exalted Ruler, replacing 2013-14 Exalted Ruler Ray Turner. The event was an opportunity for the Elks Lodge members to show appreciation for the fellow Elks that consistently provide leadership and work extensively in the various charity and communal programs the Elks spearhead throughout Lake County.

Other officers being appointed include Keith Helling as Leading Knight, Mike Leach as Lecturing Knight, Kelli Kuska as Loyal Knight, Karen McClain was re-appointed Secretary, Mikell Newton was named Treasurer, Kerry McClain was declared Esquire, and Joseph Utley was named Chaplin.

A formal ceremony inducting the new officers was held at the Lakeview B.P.O.E. 1536 Elks Lodge, followed by a social hour and formal dinner. Food was provided by Ray and Marla Turner, with assistance from multiple volunteers.

Following dinner Phillips and Turner took turns giving speeches and announcing several awards and gifts of appreciation to Elks Lodge members who have gone above and beyond in their service and volunteerism.

The Exalted Ruler position is voted on by fellow Elks Lodge members and is held for one calendar year until a new Exalted Ruler is elected along with new officers. Turner had been a three-time Exalted Ruler for the lodge. Beyond providing ceremonial leadership, the position requires extensive work such as handling budgets, community outreach, and upkeep of the lodge.

The Elks Lodge is a volunteer organization dedicated to improving the community through outreach, particularly in youth programs and assisting veterans. On display at the event were several quilts made by Elks Lodge members that are being donated to the KCI Clinic.

Other clubs also utilize the Elks Lodge building, including the Rotary Club, Soroptimists, and Lions.

The Elks Lodge is located at 323 N. F St. in Lakeview, the office can be reach at 541-947-2258.
