Lakeview High School Volleyball Coach Suzy Larson wanted to try something a little different this year for the official start of fall practice, organizing a father-daughter tournament at Honker Court on Sunday, Aug. 17 for current LHS players and their parents.
With crowds lining the rafters to cheer on the round-robin tournament, it was a fun way to start the season in grand fashion. Emphasis on fashion, as all faux pas were thrown out as each team was encouraged to dress festively, many taking it to absurd levels. Of the 11 two-person teams competing, several dressed in matching outfits of camouflage complete with face paint or patriotic attire. Turning the most heads though was the team of Greg and Carly Larson, wearing matching outfits down to the finest detail including pink shorts and blond wigs.
As for the games themselves, the action was fast and furious, with games only being played to 11 to maximize the number of matchups possible. In the end it was the team of Bret and Amanda Arcularius proving victorious. A senior this year, Amanda in addition to playing volleyball is also a standout on the LHS softball team.
Prizes were awarded for best outfits, fittingly going to the Larson’s, as well as the tournament champions and top plays. Buzz Johnston and Dan Hamrick both received recognition and gift certificates for great individual plays, Hamrick’s being a return volley off of his head.
The event was also a fundraiser, with donations from the thoroughly entertained spectators going towards the LHS volleyball team. The first home game of the LHS season will be on Thursday, Sept. 4 hosting Henley High School starting at 5 p.m.
