Similar to their November food boxes to help local individuals with Thanksgiving dinner, the Lake County Food Share is giving out Christmas food boxes on Thursday, Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The site of distribution will be the Food Share Warehouse, located at 247 N. N St.
Each box will contain a selection of food items put together by the staff of the Food Share, dependent upon stock available. They are preparing to distribute around 250 such boxes.
“As much as possible, we will provide the main essentials for a meal,” said Vice-President of the Food Share, Dianne Clay. Food Share Pres. Joe Wright added that all food for the boxes and the Food Share in general is available only because of donations.
A local couple, for instance, provides fresh fruits in the form of apples and oranges each year for the Christmas boxes, but many others volunteer their time to put them together.
Many other food items are bought with money donated to the Food Share.
“We usually don’t run short of volunteers,” said Clay. Wednesday, Dec. 18 is the group’s workday for the box distribution, when volunteers gather in the morning to organize the food for each box.
“There’s no such thing as too many vegetables or too much fruit,” added Wright. “We also need baby food and diapers if anyone wants to donate them. We have lots of calls for baby food.”
