Harold C. Miles

Harold C. Miles, 94, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, in Vancouver, Wash. at the Ft. Vancouver Veteran’s Medical Facility.
Harold was born in Webb, Idaho, Aug. 21, 1917, to Charles Carroll and Zadie (Fansler) Miles.
His grandparents, John Miles and Caroline (King) Miles had traveled west with their families on the “Oregon Trail” to Idaho and then continued on the “Applegate Trail” to Myrtle Creek in 1882.
Harold attended high school in Myrtle Creek following the appointment of his father as Postmaster in Roseburg. Harold married Margie (Morton) Miles on July 15, 1941.
From Sept. 1, 1939, to Sept. 16, 1940 Harold served in the Oregon National Guard.  He then served during WWII in the U. S. Army – “Pacific Theater” and was severely wounded during the invasion of the Japanese-held Solomon Island.  He was honorably discharged in 1943.
Following his discharge, Harold worked for the Shevlin-Hixon Logging and Lumber Company at their logging camp between LaPine and Fort Rock.  In 1944 he and his wife, Margie, obtained a small farm in the Fort Rock valley near his father Charles C. Miles, his brother Jess Miles and Margie’s parents David and Grace Morton.
In  1949-1950 Harold and Margie moved to Portland, where he obtained an electrical engineering degree from Multnomah College and went to work for Tektronix, where he worked from 1951-1975.
Following his retirement from Tektronix, Harold and Margie returned to the Fort Rock – Christmas Valley area.  Margie, passed away in 2000.  Harold subsequently lived for a short period near Silverton then moved to Vancouver, Wash. where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and Ken Fowler until being admitted to the Veteran’s Medical Facilities in Portland and Vancouver, Wash.
Harold was preceded in death by wife Margie; father Charles C. Miles; mother Zadie Miles; brothers John R. Miles, Jess F. Miles, Paul C. Miles and James W. Miles; sisters Rose F. Miles, Constance Miles, Golden “Faith” Miles and Hope A. Miles.
Harold is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and Ken Fowler; grandsons Rev. Graham Fowler of Philadelphia, Penn. and Ian Fowler of Vancouver, Wash.
A memorial service conducted by his grandson Rev. Graham Fowler, will be held at the Christmas Valley Community Church on Saturday,  Nov. 19, 2011 at 10 a.m.
