This week started off with a bang for Lakeview Honker boys basketball. The second meeting between the Honkers and Lost River Raiders on Honker Court, Tues. Jan. 21, proved to be a better matchup than their first. Earlier in the season the Honkers were beat by the Raiders, and Coach Cody Blair said they were not going to let that happen again. Right from the start the Honkers were a force to reckon with, leaping ahead of the Raiders 46-9 in the first half.
Keeping the momentum going the Honkers continued to maneuver around the competition clenching the win with a score of 89-29.
“The game against Lost River really showed everybody what we could to as a team,” said Blair. Lane Hadley led the Honkers in scoring with 22 points, Jace Frank added 15 points while Logan Staub and Conner Forbes each had 11.
Unfortunately for the Honkers, Friday’s game Jan. 24, against the Cascade Christian Challengers did not get off to a fast start and was not the momentum coaches were hoping for.
“We started off slow,” commented Blair, “we only scored two points in the first quarter.” Coming into the second half, Lakeview picked up the pace but were unable to overcome the mere 11 points they scored in the first half.
“I’m proud of the guys,” commented Blair, “they never gave up”.
The Honkers scored 34 points in the second half but their effort was not enough for the win. The Honkers fell to the Challengers 53-45. Danny Smith and Lane Hadley each scored 12 points for the Honkers.
Saturday, Jan. 25, game against Hosanna showed Lakeview’s true stamina. Trailing by two at the end of the first half. Lakeview rallied for a come back in the second half with Landen Lampman hitting four 3-point shots in the third quarter and another three 3-point shots in the fourth quarter.
“Lampman really stepped up when we needed him to. Once he caught fire the whole team picked it up,” commented Blair. Lampman led the Honkers in scoring with 22 points for the game and Lane Hadley added another 17.
The Honkers Junior Varsity team won Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Lost River; lost to Cascade Christian on Friday, Jan. 24; and won Saturday, Jan. 25 against. Hosanna.
