As the wrestling season continues, 11 Lakeview High School grapplers made the long trip to Corning, Calif. for a tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26. The squad was short a few wrestlers due to SATs and illness, but they managed two fifth place finishes. The tournament featured 40 plus teams from California, Oregon and Nevada, with 32 person brackets.
Because it is a one-day tournament, and wrestlers are limited to five matches per day. Losers in the first two rounds drop off into their own consolation bracket competing for two seventh place medals, while wrestlers who make the quarter finals finish up in the championship bracket, competing for first, second, two third places and two fifth places.
Connor Lysne at 129 lbs and Dylan Amerson at 288 both made it to semi-final action. Lysne beat Colton Franklin of Gridley by major decision 11-0, and Mark McMahon of West Valleys 10-5, before falling in the semi-finals to #1 seed and eventual winner of the weight class, Dakota Fierro of Antelope. Lysne found himself in a tight match for third place with Rick Pierson of Clear Lake, and lost in the final seconds while attempting to break a 2-2 tie. Amerson won his first two matches (Brandon Torres of Live Oak and Malik Hopkins of Chico) by fall, but was pinned in the semi-finals by Daniel Davis of Anderson. He fought a tough match for third place, but eventually fell to Darren Echeveria of Antelope.
