On Sunday, Nov. 10 a group of young Lakeview Pop Warner football players got the chance to play at Oregon State University’s Reser Stadium in Corvallis.
Fifteen Lakeview Mighty Mites, ages 7-9, tied the day’s game against the Lebanon Warriors 18 to 18. This was part of an event called the ‘Big Smash’, hosted by the Mid-Valley Pop Warner League.
The Mighty Mites of Lakeview emerged from their league playoffs as the second seed team, and only lost one game against the Mustangs of Klamath Falls during their season. Lebanon’s Mighty Mite Warriors were placed second seed in the Mid-Valley League.
Lakeview’s Mighty Mite coach, Shannon Ludwig, said of his team, “We are proud of every one of these boys. They continue to show determination and discipline all while keeping it fun.”
As part of the Big Smash event, the visiting team from Lakeview was allowed to practice on the indoor football field where the Oregon State Beavers practice before their game.
“The boys were really taking in the moment with big eyes and smiles on their faces because they knew where they were. I don’t think it’s something that they will ever forget. I am pretty sure their parents won’t,” said Ludwig of the experience.
The entire group also had activities on the Saturday before their game, practicing and rock climbing in Oregon State’s McAlexander Fieldhouse. Klamath’s Pop Warner League gave the kids a pizza party afterwards.
