Lakeview native earns baseball scholarship from BMCC

Recent Grant Union graduate Jordan Ackerman, grandson of Lakeview lifers Dale and Suzette Ackerman, has earned a baseball scholarship to play for Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton.

Ackerman was born in Lakeview but moved to John Day after his father, Chris Ackerman, transferred to the area.

The 2013 graduate played outfielder and pitcher for the Prospectors under coach Brian Delaney for all four years of high school.

He earned 1st team All League as an outfielder, District 7 League Player of the Year, 1st Team All-State Pitcher, Oregon’s 2A State Player of the Year, and the 1A/2A/3A All-Stars Series East Side MVP.

Ackerman found out about the scholarship to play for BMCC around the 6th of June, at which point he and the rest of his family were thrilled.

“I was very excited,” he said. But it wasn’t an easy decision for him to make. Before learning of the scholarship, Ackerman was trying to play for Treasure Valley Community College, and had to choose between the two schools.

When asked what tipped him in the direction of BMCC, he said, “It was the new coach they got. He’s a pretty knowledgeable guy and he coached at Pacific University for the past seven years. A new guy coming in will be good for the program.”

His grandfather said the family couldn’t be happier. “We are very excited for him,” said Dale. “He’s very dedicated with his baseball.”
