Famous words by an American astronaut were cited during the commencement ceremony: one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
Lakeview High School’s graduating class of 2013 bid farewell to their high school years and cast their initial greeting to the future at graduation, held at Honker Court on Saturday, June 1.
The grandstands and floor seating, along with limited standing room space on the north wall of the gymnasium, held anxious, proud and well-wishing friends and family members, capturing the occasion for posterity on their cell phones and hand-held digital camcorders.
Lake County School District No. 7 Supt. Sean Gallagher and LCSD7 Board Chairman Darryl Anderson provided the opening remarks for the ceremony.
“We truly believe it takes a whole community to raise a child,” Supt. Gallagher said. “And students, reflect upon the path you took to get here,” he continued. “Please remember your education doesn’t end here today… Use your educational training to pursue your dreams and desires.”
Valedictorians Teona Cobian, Samantha Gallagher and Jessie Nicholl provided the Valedictory Address, while Salutatorian Addie Engelhart provided the respective Salutatory Address.
The LHS choir’s performance of “Some Nights” by Fun preceded teacher Greg Kelley’s commencement address, which then segued into a slide show showcasing images of this year’s senior class.
Following the awarding of diplomas, senior class officers Mandi Brooks, Sandra Castro, Samantha Gallagher and Jessie Nicholl offered a few pearls of wisdom as the graduates prepared to choose their individual paths in life.
