Mary was married to Cornelius “Bob” Fitzgerald on March 4, 1946 at Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, then returned to the family ranch in Plush. They were married 49 years.
Known by many as Mother Mary, she enjoyed playing bridge, participating in her children’s activities and was active in promoting the cattle industry by serving as a local and state Cattlewomen president. She was recognized by Oregon State University with the Diamond Pioneer Agricultural Achievement Award. Proud of her Irish heritage she was the family historian and left a wealth of information. Throughout her life she worked as the Plush School teacher, for the Lake County Sheriff department, summers for the US Forest Service, as a switch board operator, bank assistant and wrote for the newspaper.
During WWII she served in the US Navy with the WAVES and had lunch with President Roosevelt. She was a lifetime member of Soroptimist, served many years as the GGG’s advisor, was a member of the AAUW, Lake County Historical Society, was instrumental in establishing the Irish room at the Lake County Museum and was active in numerous civic organizations. She loved the Lake County Round-Up, attending the first rodeo and not missing one until she turned 92. While a lifelong resident of Lake County, she also resided for many years at Crystal Terrace, Klamath Falls. She was a gracious hostess, rarely meeting a stranger and was genuinely interested in the stories of the people she met. She loved her family and cherished her friends.
