New reporter joins Examiner staff

A new general news reporter and sports editor recently joined the staff of the Lake County Examiner.

Anthony Burrola, 25, a native Southern Californian, relocated for the job in the last two weeks and will be covering town government issues along with general interest news.  In addition, he will also be heading up primary coverage of Lake County’s high school sports programs.

Burrola comes to Lake County from La Mirada, Calif., located in Orange County, which he called home since 1997.  Prior to that, he also lived in Montebello.  A graduate of La Mirada High School, Burrola transferred from Fullerton Junior College to California State University-Fullerton, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Burrola’s writing experience includes blogs on film and sports, with his first effort dating back to 2007.  In 2010, he started a daily blog focused on sports programs he followed and for which he held great passion, and it was this effort that was featured on ESPN’s Sports Nation program as their pick for Site of the Day.

“That was pretty cool to see that on there,” he said.

During college, school work naturally preoccupied most of his time, but Burrola did manage to acquire internship experience with ABC covering UCLA and USC games and practices in the fall of 2011, following graduation.  He also wrote for the Oregon Sports News web site, primarily centering coverage on the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks teams.

Indulging in his other passion, television and movies, Burrola said he and a friend put together 11 to 12 online hour-long podcast programs on television programming they’d just watched.

Burrola said his primary leisure time passions are following the NBA and NFL on the sports forefronts, as well as watching movies and varied television programs. Self-described as “the human IMDB,” Burrola is an avid fan of cinema.

He cited the highly-acclaimed series Breaking Bad as a favorite program, along with The Office and Community.

“Breaking Bad is the best show I’ve ever seen,” he said.  “If Jennifer Lawrence is in a movie, I’ll watch it.”

Burrola also cited Will Ferrell movies as favorite picks, and he’s seen and enjoyed most of the superhero movies that have been produced.
