A new reporter recently joined the ranks of the Lake County Examiner staff, with Eric Hedlund replacing former sports editor and general news reporter Anthony Burrola.
Hedlund is a native of Lake County, having been born and raised in New Pine Creek. The son of Gene and Cathy Hedlund, his siblings include brothers Jeffrey and Steven, as well as sisters Karen and Emily.
A 2005 graduate of Lakeview High School, Hedlund attended the Oregon Institute of Technology for about three years. There, his studies encompassed mechanical engineering, computer software engineering and biology, but ultimately he returned to his Lake County home in 2010.
Hedlund previously mowed lawns during the summer months, and also worked for Safeway for about a year. In recent months prior to his arrival at the Examiner, he worked as a postmaster relief for the U.S. Post Office’s New Pine Creek station.
Hedlund’s duties will include overseeing the sports and outdoors section of the newspaper as the Examiner’s resident sports editor. High school sports programs under Hedlund’s jurisdiction will include Lakeview and North Lake.
General news beats covered by Hedlund will include Town of Lakeview municipal government, such as coverage of town council meetings, local schools, museums, state and federal fish and wildlife agencies and more.
Hedlund noted that he’d expressed interest in any volunteer opportunities available during the summer of 2012, having always held an affinity for writing.
“I’m thrilled to have a local to fill this position. Hopefully this will bring some stability and Eric is a great young man,” said Tillie Flynn, general manager.
