Galleries within the Lake County Circuit Court were packed with colleagues, friends, family and law enforcement officials last week for the official swearing-in of Rob Nichols as the newest Lake County Circuit Court judge.
Nichols was appointed to the position in March by Gov. John Kitzhaber, replacing the honorable Judge Lane Simpson who served on the bench for some 20 years and announced his retirement earlier this year.
Nichols spoke on his years of service as a local attorney, thanking staff and colleagues for their support over the years. He also acknowledged Judge Simpson’s years of service in the Lake County community.
The culmination of the occasion arrived as Judge Simpson assisted Judge Nichols into his black gown, perhaps the most symbolic garb associated with judgeship.
Lake County Sheriff Phil McDonald also presented gifts to Judge Simpson in the form of a pair of signature trees, framed prints featuring sage words of wisdom bordered by Lake County Circuit Court and law enforcement staff signatures. A second signature tree featured the same signatures from Klamath County.
