Norma Neva Mathews Messner

Norma Neva Mathews Messner, 92 passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Christmas Valley.
Norma was born in Fort Bidwell, Calif. on Oct. 21, 1918 to Curtis and Fay (Mason) Mathews. She grew up in Fort Bidwell where she was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She continued her education by taking some post-graduate courses in business at Mount Bidwell High before taking pre-nursing courses at Cedarville High. She then went on to Chico State College, majoring in elementary education.
Norma was an accomplished musician, playing the piano, accordion, guitar and violin. During her high school years and later, she played the piano and accordion in a local orchestra. They played for dances at Plush, Adel, Eagleville and Fort Bidwell.
Norma married Ernie Messner on Aug. 30, 1946 at Winnemucca, Nev. and became a ranch wife.
She was preceded in death by her parents Curtis and Fay Mathews; husband Ernie Messner; brother Claude (Sonny) Mathews; sister Elma (Babe) Mathews.
Norma is survived by son and daughter-in-law Tim and Kristi Messner; daughter and son-in-law Becky “Sis” and Dave Womack; grandson Timmy Messner.
A funeral service will be held at the Fort Bidwell Peoples Church Building on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 1 p.m. with a private, family committal in the Fort Bidwell Cemetery. Following the services a reception will be held in the Fort Bidwell Civic Center. Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Desert Rose Funeral Chapel.
