Nova J. (O’Connell) Young, 91, passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at Lake District Hospital surrounded by her family.
Nova was born on Jan. 13, 1922 in Fairburn, S.D. to Grover and Ada (Sweet) O’Connell. She was raised and went to school in the Black Hills and moved to Lakeview in February 1942.
She worked as a waitress in Lakeview and that is where she met the love of her life, Calvin Young, and they were married June 6, 1942. They moved to Myrtle Creek in 1947 and lived there until 1958 when they moved to Paisley to raise their family. Nova worked at the Paisley Mercantile for many years and finished up her working career at the U.S. Forest Service in Paisley.
Nova was very well known for her quilting and sewing skills, as well as her baking and card playing skills. She was part of the Paisley Pinochle Club right up until her passing. Her high bids will be greatly missed.
Nova was a long time member and Officer in the Rebekahs Lodge in Paisley and enjoyed being a part of an organization that gave out scholarships to help further Paisley graduates education. She also loved bowling, and was on the Women’s Bowling League in Lakeview for several years.
Nova was preceded in death by her parents Grover and Ada O’Connell, three brothers and three sisters and her husband of over 62 years, Calvin Young in 2005.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Duane and Linda Young; son and best friend Doug Young and Joy Emery; daughter Delores Efird of Paisley; and daughter Debi Jones of Lakeview, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Nova will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at the Paisley Community Center at 11:00 a.m, with a potluck to follow.
