Quiet Hero

On June 5, and ideal trout fishing rip at Lofton Lake west of Lakeview, took a life-threatening turn.

A couple from Jacksonville were both fishing out of their individual rafts at different ends of the lake. The woman was attempting to land a large trout when she capsized her pontoon craft in about 12 feet of water. The woman struggled to right herself unsuccessfully. The weight of the tube above her, waders filling with water and unreachable safety connections forced her head beneath the water.

Fortunately, all of this was seen by Larry Saxon of Lakeview. Mr. Saxon immediately rowed to her assistance — with no time to spare. The lady had almost given up her fight for air. Saxon pulled her dead weight to his boat and was somehow able to lift the exhausted lady to safety without capsizing his own small boat. This gentleman saved the lady from certain drowning.

Thank heaven for Mr. Saxon’s quick reactions and for being at the right place at the right time without thought for his own safety.
