Nearly a hundred walkers and runners turned out at Steninger Track at Lakeview High School on Saturday morning to participate in the 5K ShamWalk/Run, presented by the Mile High Striders Club.
The first official event of the day for the Irish Days festivities, from the littlest tikes to seniors it was a record number of people that signed up to participate and trek the 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) course.
Lakeview High School Track Coach Bobbie Steninger oversaw the event, with assistance from Melinda Howard of the Mile High Striders to track the top finishers and times.
The first event was a quarter mile children’s run for ages 8 and under, with 13 kids making the loop around the track, though some required a little assistance from mom and dad to be carried across the finish line. Zach Gray won first place in the quarter mile race.
Ninety-nine people in all then made their way to the start line of the course, some traveling from as far away as Klamath Falls to participate in the race, which included several members of the Lakeview High School Track team.
Nick Wiebelhause was the first to cross the finish line, completing the 5K course in 19:34 minutes, while Lily Sabin was the first woman to finish, with a total time of 24:11 minutes. Both Wiebelhause and Sabin are members of the LHS track team.
Katherine McKenzie was the first of the walkers to complete the course in a time of 42:08 minutes, with Michael Cuff being the top male walker at 45:50 minutes.
After every participant had crossed the finish line, prizes were awarded based on age group and category, as well as drawings for gift cards and bigger prizes while Bobbie Steninger handed out balloons to children.
The ShamWalk/Run was sponsored by Howard’s Pharmacy, the Cuff family, Subway, Back Yard Floral, Yankee Screen Printing and the Chamber of Commerce.
