Robert Leland “Bob” Salsig

Robert Leland “Bob” Salsig, 65, died Monday July 9, 2012 from Small Cell Carcinoma of the Prostate in the company of his wife and two sons at his home in Dallas.
Bob was born in San Francisco, Calif. on Sept. 21, 1946 to Betty Goodwin Salsig and Walter Beleville Salsig.  He lived in Cloverdale, Calif. early in his life, but came of age in Healdsburg, Calif., where he graduated from Healdsburg High School in the Class of 1964.
After high school, Bob wanted to join the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war.  However, he was physically incapable of serving in the armed forces, so he did the next best thing – he joined the Merchant Marine.  He sailed on the SS Winthrope Victory and SS President Wilson.  During his time in the Merchant Marines, he carried food and ammunition to American soldiers and traveled to the ports of Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Nagasaki, amongst others.  All the while he was away from home, he dutifully sent a portion of every paycheck to his mother to help out at home.
Following the Merchant Marine, Bob chased his dream of becoming a radio disc jockey and sports broadcaster.  He attended broadcasting school in Hollywood, Calif. and earned a 1st class broadcasting license.  He made his first professional radio broadcast for a small radio station in Susanville, Calif.  In 1970, Bob took a job as a disc jockey and high-school sportscaster for the Lakeview Honkers at KQIK 1230 AM in Lakeview.
It was in Lakeview that he would meet and begin a romance with Gwen Taylor. They were married Aug. 5, 1972 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakeview and would fall less than a month short of celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
Bob and Gwen moved the family frequently over the next few years until they settled permanently in Dallas in 1985.
Bob was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. He loved music and reading.
Bob was an uncommonly devoted Christian.  Even while trapped in cancer’s ever tightening grip and enduring the series of aggressive treatments to combat it, Bob never lost, nor did he so much as question, his faith and God’s plan for him.
Bob was preceded in death by his father Walter Beleville Salsig.
He is survived by his wife Gwen; mother; son and daughter-in-law Ryan Salsig and Yuliana Lisda; son Daniel Salsig; brothers Mark and Thomas Salsig; sisters Betty Salsig, Laurel Rock and Sally Tansey; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Gates at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012.  A Celebration of Life will follow immediately at the Living Hope City Church, located at 450 SE Washington St.in Dallas.
Life will go on, but it will never be as curious, colorful, fun, or interesting without Bob.
Bob’s family would like to support the Dallas Public Library, where he spent so much time and gained so much joy.  In lieu of sending flowers, please make a donation to the Dallas Public Library in his name.  Please make checks payable to Dallas Public Library and include with your check a note that it is for the Robert Leland Salsig Memorial Fund.  Please mail them to Rosalyn McGarva, C/O Dallas Public Library, 950 Main Street, Dallas 97338.
