Samuel “Sam” Farr

Samuel “Sam” Farr, 66, died at Lake District Hospital in Lakeview on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012 .
He was born to Charles and Virginia Farr in Compton, Calif. on May 7, 1946.
Sam was an expert rancher, farmer, contractor, miracle mechanic, private pilot and entrepreneur. To the dismay of high school teachers and students with whom his first hay truck shared a parking lot, he started his first business at the age of 16. After much harder work, he won over his high school sweetheart, Frances, and married her on January 15, 1966. Apprenticing under his father-in-law at 19, Sam helped build San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit’s concrete infrastructure. Finding opportunity at every turn and wasting nothing, at 20 he built his first indestructible house with scrap material left over from the transit sites.  Sam left Peter Kiewit Sons at 22 to start a contracting business. His only retirement was at the age of 36 after creating a successful construction and house moving enterprise in California. Starting with his ranch in San Ramon, Calif., he then moved to pursue his dream of ranching and farming in eastern Oregon. With the cooperation of countless mentors and a warm and supportive community, he spent the next 30 years transforming the land as he built a successful ranching and farming venture in Lakeview and Adel.
Sam endured a long life of beating medical odds from defeating cancer at the age of 22 and overcoming 15 subsequent heart attacks, knee surgeries, cow kicks to the head, etc. He cherished a community of friends and partners who were always willing to harvest fields, ship cows, mend equipment and keep his ranch running during moments of need. His passion for work stemmed from a lifetime of never knowing which day would be his last and always ensuring his family was well taken care of.
He was preceded in death by his father Charles Farr and  parents-in-law Larry and Elsie Fischer.
Sam is survived by his wife Frances; mother Virginia;  son and daughter-in-law Samuel  and  Lori Farr; daughters Samantha Farr, and Virginia Farr; daughter and son-in-law  Tammy Endicott and her husband, Lt. Col. Troy Endicott; brothers Michael Farr and James Farr; sisters  Linda King, Cindy Pacheco and Sondra Runyan. He cherished working and playing with his 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild with whom his legacy continues and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at the Lakeview United Methodist Church on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 at 2 p.m. Following the interment at Westside Cemetery, a potluck will be held at the Westside Grange Hall. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel.
