Shirley Start, 89, of Lakeview passed away Monday, April 14, 2014. The only child of Harry J. Anthony and Helen Minton Anthony, Shirley lived most of her life in her beloved Lake County. As a child she lived in Plush, Paisley, Clover Flat and Lakeview.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and attended Sacred Heart Academy in Klamath Falls for her first three years of high school, graduating from Lakeview High in 1943.
Shirley met Sam S. Start following World War II. He came to Lakeview to visit his sister’s family and chose to stay. Shirley and Sam were married for 43 years until his death in 1990.
Shirley was active in her children’s school and extracurricular activities helping with Cub Scouts, Brownie Scouts, PTA, Little League and 4-H. In later years Shirley enjoyed her time with the Lakeview Senior Center, VFW, and Lake County Historical Society.
She and Sam began Start’s Electric in 1962 and she coordinated service calls and billing out of the family home for several years until they moved the business downtown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Start and her parents.
She is survived by her sons Sam (Connie) Start, Jr. of Lakeview and Tony (Randall) Start of Bremerton, Wash.; daughter Ginny (Don) Schreiner of Central Point; grandchildren Nathan (Bari) Schreiner of Lacey, Wash., Laura Schreiner (Joe McGuire) of Bloomington, Minn., Michael (Natasha) Start of Lakeview, Tyler Start (fiancée Cathy Bothwell), and Riley (Melissa Tomé) Start of Bremerton, Wash.; great-grandchildren Corbin Start, Makina Start, Miranda Schreiner, Patrick McGuire and Timothy McGuire.
Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans War Memorial c/o VFW Layne Clifton Post 4070, PO Box 143, Lakeview 97630 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Of special note is the fact that Shirley’s father, Harry Anthony, was instrumental in the initial fundraising and construction of the War Memorial that stands on the courthouse grounds today.
A Celebration of Life will be arranged at a later date.
