An educational outreach program for pregnant women will commence on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Lake District Hospital. Entitled the Stork Lunch and Learn program, the series will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria annex, led by staff educator and lead obstetrics registered nurse Kathy Burkholder.
“We recognized there are women who would come in with lots of questions and were unaware of all the resources here in Lakeview,” Burkholder said.
A primary focus of the program is providing moms-to-be with the information needed to stay healthy during pregnancy for the sake of both mom and baby.
“We thought it would be nice to just have an informal luncheon… for anyone that’s delivering,” Burkholder said, noting that the program is not solely for first-time moms.
Participants will receive a packet of information inclusive of such topics as infant feeding, prenatal health and health effects of smoking and alcohol. A respiratory therapist will detail options related to smoking cessation.
Tours of the hospital’s birthing suites will be available. Jacuzzi tubs are available for those seeking non-medicated, ‘natural’ births.
The program will be held on a quarterly basis throughout the year, Burkholder said.
“They can come any time in their pregnancy…,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be early in the pregnancy.”
