The Lake County Employee’s Wellness Committee would like to commend Lake District Hospital on their announcement to make Lake District Hospital a tobacco free property.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and chronic illness in the United States and Lake County is no exception. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 443,000 people die each year from cigarette smoking. In Lake County, nearly one in 20 residents suffer from a serious illness caused by tobacco and 20 residents die each year from tobacco use. People who use tobacco suffer from debilitating chronic illness at a higher rate than non-tobacco users.
As a group, we support the idea of tobacco free properties. Tobacco free hospital properties promotes a healthier environment for not only patients and visitors, but for employees as well. Studies show that tobacco free properties support people who are trying to quit tobacco by removing sights and smells that may trigger them to smoke a cigarette.
Lake District Hospital is an important organization in Lake County. The Hospital’s commitment to improving the health of their patients, employees and visitors has set a positive example for improving the health and well-being of the community.
