Thelma Jean Robinson Rice, 82, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2012.
She was born in Lakeview on Sept. 14, 1931 to Cressler and Goldia Robinson who were ranchers in Adel where she attended the first eight years of school. During these years there were many 4H projects including livestock. The family moved to Lakeview in 1945. Thelma graduated from Lakeview High School in 1949. During her 4 years at Oregon State College (now OSU) she earned a B.S. in Education and a Bachelors of Education at Southern Oregon College.
She and former high school classmate Bill (Bev) Rice were married in 1952. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy he graduated from OSU in 1957 and was employed by the U.S. Fish & Game Dept. With two small children they lived in Ketchikan, Alaska until it became the 49th state in 1959. After that Susanville, Calif. became their destination where the marriage ended in divorce. Bill later died in 1995.
Thelma was a substitute teacher for 10 years, then became a full time teacher for the next 20 years in Oregon and Idaho where she loved her students and continued to hear from many of them.
Ten more years in Idaho were filled with traveling and performing special services in education. She later became caregiver to her parents at the Big Valley ranch and in Lakeview.
The following years included travel to many countries, her favorites being Austria, Switzerland, and Nova Scotia. A mission trip with a church group took her to Jamaica to build a girl’s hostel at West Indies College. Many years were spent in church work, both appointed and as a volunteer.
She is survived by her son David Rice of Salinas, Calif.; daughter Susan (Glenn) Way of Vale; brother and sister-in-law Don and Diana Robinson of Adel; sister Pauline Fowler of Richland Wash.; grandson Garret Way of Vale; granddaughter Kaley (Coy) Patterson of La Grande; great-grandson Cooper Patterson, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Her joy was in her family and her best friend Jesus.
Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery at a later date.
