Thomas Benson (Ben) Vernon, 92, died at the Lake District Hospital in Lakeview on Sunday Nov. 11, 2012.
Ben was born in Lakeview on March 29, 1920 to Will and Cora (Carmen) Vernon. He was raised on the family ranch south of Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1937. He attended Oregon State College before entering the military at the start of WWII and served in the Air Corps. Following his discharge from the military he returned to Lakeview and continued working on the family ranch.
He enjoyed rodeos as a bull and bare back bronc rider.
Ben married Virginia Bartholomew in Gresham in 1954 and they were happily married for 58 years.
He was a member of the Goose Lake Baptist Church in New Pine Creek and was involved in many community organizations. He was a founding member of the Lakeview FFA chapter while in high school, the 20-40 Mens Club after WWII and served on he Lake County Fair Board.
Ben served and was president of the Lakeview Highlanders Ski Club, the Lake County Round-up and the Lake County Cattlemans Association.
He loved ranching, the people and the countryside of Lake County.
He was preceded in death by his parents Will and Cora Vernon; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Don Keeling; and sister Jean O’Hara.
Survivors include his wife Virginia of Lakeview; sons and daughters-in-law Jack and Debra Vernon of Lakeview and Thomas and Brandy Vernon of Columbia City; grandchildren Ashley and Kent Vernon; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Goose Lake Baptist Church with Pastor Clifton Gillmore officiating.
The Interment followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery family plot in Lakeview.
Casket bearers are Joe Foster, Tom Corbett, Ken Vernon, Robin Vincent, Ross Pierce, John Flynn and Otis Mobley.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Vernon may be made to the Lakeview Disaster Unit, 245 N. F St., Lakeview 97630 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
