Plans were finalized at a recent organizing meeting for the third annual Tour de Outback event, slated for Aug. 1-2 showcasing the scenic bikeway between the communities of Lakeview, Adel and Plush.
Festivities will begin on Friday, Aug. 1 with an evening social ride starting at Hunter’s Hot Springs at 5:30 p.m. in Lakeview and traveling 16 miles to Warner Canyon Ski Area for drinks.
Saturday, Aug. 2 will incorporate three different bike routes for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. For the top riders a 100-mile Century ride will begin at the Lake County Fairgrounds at 7 a.m., looping through the communities of Plush and Adel and returning to the fairgrounds. Intermediate riders can instead enjoy the Metric Century, a 65-mile course starting at the Camas Snow Park at 8:15 a.m., looping through Plush and Adel and returning to Camas. For the beginner riders a route starting in Adel and traveling to Plush has been designated. Starting at the Adel store at 9 a.m., Beginners will travel the 18 miles from Adel to Plush, or alternately looping from Adel to Plush and returning to Adel.
Roads will be chalked with directions, and maps will be provided to riders. The route follows the Oregon Outback Scenic Bikeway, presenting gorgeous scenery and riding conditions while promising more critters than cars.
Along the route a total of seven stations will be strategically located to assist riders with water, first aid, provide bathrooms, and any bike repairs that may be required. In addition, two vehicles, known as Sag Wagons, will bring up the rear providing aid and accounting for all participants. A shuttle van service will also be provided for bikes and riders to the starting line of the metric century and beginner rides for those requiring it.
Registration for the event is $40, with special dri-fit shirts sold separately for $25. All riders will receive a goodie bag for their participation, including vouchers to be redeemed at the Adel Store, Plush Store or Subway in Lakeview for post ride meals or snacks. Also included will be details on a post-ride mixer and social event for all participants.
Every registrant for the Tour de Outback will also be entered into a raffle where one lucky rider will receive a Plush diamond.
