A landmark sight at the junction of highways 395 and 31 north of Lakeview, the Valley Falls Store recently re-opened under new ownership.
The store, which also features a trio of gas pumps out front as a true-blue ‘last chance’ for a fill-up before motorists continue northbound on either roadway, is now owned and operated by Ken Wolf. Wolf re-opened the store about three weeks ago, as of Thursday, Oct. 3.
Wolf noted that his number one priority is to re-establish the business as a consistent entity.
“People are starting to realize I’m open,” he said, noting that the store has seen irregular hours under previous operators; a bugaboo that he aims to quash.
At present, Wolf is working to revamp the kitchen area for food service. He plans to offer up limited food service, including soups, sausage gravy, hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches.
At any rate, Wolf noted that hot coffee is available all day, every day.
Future hopes include installation of a deep fry grill, he said.
Born in Iowa, Wolf most recently lived in southern California. Amongst his skill sets is woodworking, as he has created numerous puzzles and carvings through the years.
It was while searching for a new home with two large buildings for his varied tools and that he stumbled across a Craigslist ad for the store.
“That was my goal, to live in a place like this,” he said. “Just a good, old-fashioned country store type of place.”
Ultimately, it fit right in with his goals and he decided to buy. Wolf hopes to improve the aesthetics of the building and eventually put in both hiker’s (minimal amenities) cabins and tourists (more elaborate) cabins. He’s also setting up a picnic area for travelers seeking to stretch their legs during their travels.
Emergency gas service is also available 24 hours per day.
The Valley Falls Store is located at 28314 Hwy 395.
