In honor of the Memorial Day holiday, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4070 will host ceremonies on Monday, May 26, at several area cemeteries.
The group, which is led by Post Commander Greg Randolph, will first convene at the Lake County Courthouse Veteran’s Memorial at 10 a.m.
The ceremony often features words of reflection, a prayer, a three-volley firing squad and the performance of ‘Taps’ in closing.
The VFW will then perform their ceremony at the International Order of Oddfellows Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Westside Cemetery at noon.
Sometime between 1 and 2 p.m., the VFW will perform a ceremony at the New Pine Creek Cemetery.
Formerly known as Decoration Day, the holiday was established after the Civil War in remembrance of the Union and Confederate soldiers that died during the war. During the 20th century, its designation was extended to commemorate all Americans that died in military service.
