A tradition for many years, this year’s Jennie Welch Memorial Golf Tournament drew in a healthy contingency of duffers willing to continue their support of the annual event.
This year’s event was held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at LakeRidge Golf Course, with an enthusiastic group turning out to compete in the 9-hole scramble.
Keith Welch emerged as the winner of the men’s accuracy drive competition, with Jack Graham taking the win in the kids’ division, for entrants aged 12 to 18 years. Max Graham won the division for kids 11 years and under, while Ann Logan won the women’s accuracy drive division.
Kasey Clemens took the men’s Closest to the Pin competition, with Quinn Graham winning for kids 11 and under. Jody Graham won on behalf of the women’s division.
The team of Melvin, Clydeen and Darby Dick, along with Jeff Lillibridge, won the gross score for the scramble, while the net score saw a tie between the teams of Kasey Clemens, Linda, Steven and Keith Pardue and that of Buzz Johnston, Shari, Keith and Ashley Reed.
The annual tournament, now in its seventh year, featured a Hawaiian theme with competitors clad in colorful leis in the colorful spirit of the occasion. The tournament is held in memoriam to its namesake, Jennie Welch, a cancer victim who passed away in 2006.
Welch, a mother of two, is fondly remembered as an avid golfer, as Tandalin Gerber offered words of tribute during the post-tournament meal and live auction festivities.
The live auction at this year’s tournament raised more than $4,000 alone, with some 30 items placed on the auction block for the highest bidder. Items ranged from handmade items to a plethora of products donated by a multitude of local businesses.
