Free healthy lunches for kids and summer fun fit the bill for the YMCA of Klamath Falls program in Lakeview.
Through the state-funded Summer Food Program, kids ages 1-18 can get free lunches at the YMCA and neighboring McDonald Park from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday all summer. Lunches consist of meat, proteins, grains, fruit, vegetables and 1 percent milk, ensuring that kids continue to eat healthy lunches.
“We follow the same nutritional guidelines as school lunch programs,” said Dawn Turner, who along with Larissa Friermood shops and prepares meals each day for Lakeview kids. Lunches are also available for people over 18 for $3.
In addition to food, weekly summer camps will continue through August, each week with a different theme such as Bird Week, Wacky Science, Dinosaur Adventure and Fun in the Sun. The weeklong camps run Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., costing $85 per child. Kids involved in the program will also visit the kiddie pool at Lakeview Community Swimming Pool and participate in the library summer reading program.
The YMCA welcomes volunteers, for more information on free lunch or summer camps please contact Dawn Turner at 541-947-3500. The Lakeview YMCA is located at 618 S. F St.
